André Masson, an auctioneer at the famous Scottie’s auction house, receives a letter one day stating that a painting by Egon Schiele has been discovered in Mulhouse at the home of a young worker. Very skeptical, he makes the trip and has to face the truth: the painting is authentic, a masterpiece gone missing since 1939, confiscated by the Nazis. André sees this discovery as the pinnacle of his career, but also the beginning of a struggle that could jeopardize it. Fortunately, he will be assisted by his ex-wife and colleague Bertina, and by his eccentric intern Aurore.
Commissaire-priseur de renom, André Masson ne se distingue pas par son amabilité. La morgue qu’il affiche constamment exaspère sa jeune stagiaire, Aurore, une menteuse invétérée. Sa solitude attendrit en revanche son ancienne compagne et collègue Bertina, perspicace et séduisante. Lorsqu’un tableau d’Egon Schiele disparu durant la Deuxième guerre mondiale refait surface dans la maison d’un jeune ouvrier à Mulhouse, le spécialiste d’art se trouve face à la chance de sa carrière. La mise aux enchères du tableau s'annonce toutefois semée d’embuches. À partir d’un scénario ingénieux, le réalisateur français Pascal Bonitzer fait montre de son adresse en matière de direction d’acteur·rices, rôles secondaires compris. Réunissant certains grands noms du cinéma hexagonal – on retrouve notamment le couple de L’été dernier, Léa Drucker et Olivier Rabourdin –, le casting fait également la part belle aux talents émergents. S’y distingue notamment le jeune comédien genevois Arcadi Radeff qui allie candeur, timidité et maladresse dans son interprétation du manœuvre entre les mains duquel se retrouve la toile du grand peintre autrichien spoliée par les Nazis.
